The Episcopal Diocese of Virginia is all about inclusivity and welcoming everyone. It was very important that their brand reflects those values.
The Episcopal shield is an important symbol of their faith. It serves as a beacon of light and familiarity. The Diocese of Virginia has been around since 1785, so their traditions are important. But, new ideas are also important. We had to find a way to incorporate both into their brand.
On the shield, we incorporated several elements to make the overall design. First, the Bishop's mitre is at the top. On the shield itself, we incorporated the cross, and mountains and rivers to represent the landscape of Virginia. Encompassing the shield is the Bishop's crozier and key, which represent the traditional values of the Episcopalian church. The cross represents faith for all people - regardless of their background.
